Suriname
Country for adventurers, jungle lovers and gourmets
Beautiful Surinam is bordered by the Atlantic
Ocean, Guyana, French Guyana and Brazil. With Paramaribo
as its capital city (over 200.000 inhabitants) this
country is a melting-pot of Creoles, Chinese, Hindi,
Javanese, Lebanese and Europeans and of course the original
inhabitants: the Indians.
With an estimate of about 450.000 inhabitants, Surinam
is a relatively thinly populated country with an excess
of nature, beautiful weather, delicious food, and an
incredible warm-hearted population, which among other languages, speaks
Dutch.
The hurried life hasn’t (yet) been introduced
here. From skydiving to a jungle-expedition, from a
cathedral visit to a disco and from a modern snack to
a traditional dish like kousenband! Surinam has it all!!
Culture
Surinam is a South-American country with a Caribbean
charisma, where Dutch is the official language. The
country has been visited by many populations throughout
the ages. The multiracial character is nowadays very well
recognizable. Especially in a city as Paramaribo, where
many people get together to do business. Paramaribo
is very elongated because of the low-rise buildings and
many individual houses. All areas have their own expression
Because of the composition of the population there's a
unique ambiance and a very special cuisine.

| Climate
Due to the fact that Surinam is so close to the equator,
the country has a tropical climate with a very high air-humidity.
The average daily temperature is about 27C and at night
it almost doesn’t get any cooler. However take
into account that in the tropics it becomes dark very
quickly. Within half an hour after semi-darkness it
is completely dark. Surinam has a lot of precipitation,
even more than Holland.
Surinam has a short
and a long rainy season; the short period from half
December until mid February, and the long period
from the end of April until mid August.
Apart from that Surinam has the northeast trade winds.
Adventure
Surinam is pre-eminently the country
for the big adventures.
An enormous jungle with a diversity of plants, trees,
animals, big rivers and the stretched-out Brokopondo
lake. The rivers can create an impressive spectacle
due to heavy rain showers, when you travel by
boat through the inlands.
Fish lovers can eat their heart out. The real adventurer
should live the “the solace”: the rapid currents
that produce a natural bubble bath.
And what's more
attractive than starting the day with a natural bubble bath, while the
haze disappears and the sun rises.
Many places in the inlands are reachable by airplane. Many people use this type of transport to start a jungle trip by foot later on. And what about mountain “Tafelberg”,
located in the south of Surinam. You’ll be needing
permission of the Indian tribal chief to enter their territory.
In short, Surinam is the country with unknown possibilities
for the real adventurers.
Surinam also offers numerous possibilities for those
who want to take it easy.
A visit to a plantation
at the waterside of the river for a lovely lunch and
afterwards a nice guided tour.
There are also possibilities for beach lovers.
Beaches with the necessary
luxury facilities are to be found on different locations. The beach at Galibi for instance, where
in certain periods, you’ll be able to admire the
Big Sea Turtles. At night they come out of the water
to lay their eggs in the sand, underneath a beautiful
thousand star sky.
